In 1950s San Francisco, petty criminal and prostitute Barbara Graham faces a misdemeanor charge for soliciting sex. She returns to her native San Diego, where she is charged with perjury after giving false alibis to two criminal friends. She resumes prostitution and other criminal activities, eventually working for thief Emmett Perkins to run a gambling operation. Graham earns money, marries her third husband Hank, and has a son, Bobby. However, Hank’s heroin addiction and abuse strain the marriage, leading Graham to force him out and evict from their apartment. Desperate, she returns to Perkins’ operation, now run by thugs John Santo and Bruce King. When police crack down, Graham surrenders. During interrogation, she is accused of helping Perkins and Santo murder Mabel Monohan, an elderly woman in Burbank. Graham insists she was home with her husband and son that night, but is indicted by a grand jury. The film follows her trial and the public outcry, with journalist Ed Montgomery—who initially portrayed her as a reckless criminal—becoming convinced she is innocent and launching a desperate campaign to save her from the gas chamber.
