Beowulf, the legendary warrior, returns to his childhood home of Heorot in the Shieldlands after years of wandering, only to discover that his adoptive father, Hrothgar, has died under suspicious circumstances. Hrothgar’s widow, Rheda, is determined to secure her position as the first female leader of the Shieldlands, while her son Slean resents Beowulf and covets the power he believes should be his. Beowulf is initially blamed for a series of mysterious deaths, including that of the reeve, but proves that a dreaded skinshifter is responsible.
