Commodore Russell is approached by his Russian friend, Admiral Vyacheslav Grudzinsky, about the sinking of the Russian Oscar II-class nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk in the Barents Sea in August 2000. The disaster began during a naval exercise when a torpedo explosion caused a catastrophic chain reaction, killing many crew members and damaging the submarine’s bow. As the few survivors remain trapped in the stern of the Kursk, their families back home grow desperate for information. The Russian Admiralty, under political pressure, refuses foreign rescue attempts and even rejects NATO’s help. Commodore Russell, representing the British government, must navigate bureaucratic and political obstacles to secure a permit for a rescue mission before it’s too late.
