Samurai Resurrection (Makai Tensho), directed by Hideyuki Hirayama, is a supernatural historical fantasy that reimagines the Shimabara Rebellion with dark, mythic elements. The story begins with Shiro Amakusa Tokisada, the young leader of the Shimabara Revolt, who dies in the brutal suppression of his Christian uprising by the Tokugawa Shogunate. In a twist of fate, Shiro is resurrected from hell, bound by a pact with demonic forces that grant him immortality and the power to resurrect other historically significant figures wronged by the Shogunate — known as makai tensho (“demonic reincarnations”). These resurrected warriors include legendary figures such as Miyamoto Musashi, Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, Araki Mataemon, and noblewoman Hosokawa Gracia. Shiro uses them to form an army of undead swordsmen, intent on overthrowing the regime and exacting revenge on those who killed his comrades. weight of his mission, torn between his past as a loyal samurai and the darkness of his new existence.
