The film follows Charlie Countryman, played by Shia LaBeouf, who is grieving the death of his mother. After her spirit appears to him, urging him to travel to Bucharest, he embarks on a journey that leads him to a series of unexpected events. On his flight, he meets Victor, a Romanian man who dies mid-flight, asking Charlie to deliver a gift to his daughter, Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood). Upon arriving in Bucharest, Charlie meets Gabi and is instantly smitten. As Charlie tries to win Gabi's heart, he discovers that she is the estranged wife of Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), a dangerous gangster.
