Dr. Watson conceives of Holmes as a way to solve crimes incognito, but when public demand grows for Holmes to appear in person, he hires a washed-up stage actor, Kincaid, to play the part. Kincaid memorizes Watson’s detailed instructions and convinces the public he is Holmes.
