The story follows Oliver Rose (Michael Douglas), a Harvard Law student turned wealthy corporate lawyer, and Barbara Rose (Kathleen Turner), a former gymnast who dedicates herself to creating a perfect home. They meet at a Nantucket auction bidding on the same antique, spark a passionate relationship, marry, and build a life of material success in Washington, D.C. Over 18 years, Oliver becomes a high-powered lawyer focused on his career, while Barbara becomes a devoted mother and decorator, filling their home with lavish possessions. As their children grow and leave for college, Barbara feels unfulfilled and resentful of Oliver’s workaholism and lack of attention. She starts a catering business to gain financial independence
