The Arena revolves around a group of sex slaves who are forced to become gladiatrices in ancient Rome. Two such fighters, a Nubian dancer and a Gaulish priestess, form an alliance to lead the others in rebellion against their oppressors. The film follows the story of Mamawi, a Nubian princess, and Bodicia, a Breton priestess, as they navigate the brutal training and combats to orchestrate a revolt against the Romans. The movie is a blend of action sequences and the women-in-prison subgenre, featuring the actresses performing their own stunts in fight scenes. The film was produced by Mark Damon under New World Pictures and shot primarily in Italy, with contributions from director Joe D'Amato in staging violence and spectacle.
