The story centers on Sally Nash (Jennifer Jason Leigh), an actress, and Joe Therrian (Alan Cumming), a novelist-turned-director, as they mark their sixth wedding anniversary after reconciling from a recent separation. Joe is preparing to direct the film adaptation of his latest bestseller, but he chooses not to cast Sally in the lead role — despite the story being inspired by her — because he believes she’s “too old” for it. Instead, he offers the part to Skye Davidson (Parker Posey), a rising actress.
