"State Fair" follows the Frake family’s three-day adventure at the 1946 Iowa State Fair, blending family ambitions, romance, and Americana with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning music. Set in the summer of 1946, the musical centers on the Frake family, a farming household from Iowa, as they prepare for and attend the annual Iowa State Fair. Parents Abel and Melissa Frake aim to win blue ribbons for their prize boar and mincemeat pie, while their children, Wayne and Margy, seek romance and personal growth amid the fair’s bustling attractions and competitions.
