Sonic is pulled into a storybook world based on the Arabian Nights by the genie Shahra to stop the evil Erazor Djinn from conquering the world. Erazor's evil magic causes the story's pages to disappear, and he aims to gain control of the Seven World Rings to become powerful enough to escape the book and destroy Sonic's world. Erazor curses Sonic with a flame on his chest, which will kill him if it goes out, tying Sonic's fate to collecting the rings to remove the curse and defeat the genie.
