In the lawless frontier town of Medicine Bend, a ruthless outlaw known as “the Preacher” enforces his twisted creed with a gun, while a corrupt businessman, Ep Clark, controls the mayor and sheriff, using his henchmen to raid wagon trains and crush competition. The story follows Captain Buck Devlin (Randolph Scott), along with his cavalry comrades Sergeant John Maitland (James Craig) and Private Wilbur Clegg (Gordon Jones), who have just mustered out of the U.S. Army. They head to Devlin’s brother’s homestead, only to find him dead from faulty ammunition. Devlin blames the defective rounds and vows to find those responsible.
