In the year A.D. 3978, a spaceship with a crew of four crashes on a distant planet. One crew member, Stewart, dies in space, and the others—mission commander George Taylor (Charlton Heston), Landon, and Dodge—awaken from deep hibernation to find their ship has sunk into a lake. Taylor estimates they are 300 light‑years from Earth, but the planet is eerily familiar. They discover a society where intelligent apes dominate, humans are mute and enslaved, and the planet is ruled by a hierarchy: orangutans as intellectuals, gorillas as warriors, and chimpanzees as scientists spoilertown.com. Taylor is captured, his throat injured so he cannot speak and taken to a city where he is studied. A chimpanzee psychologist, Zira (Kim Hunter), and her fiancé Cornelius (Roddy McDowall) become intrigued by him.
