The first season of Murdoch Mysteries introduces viewers to Detective William Murdoch, who uses unconventional methods such as fingerprinting and blood testing to solve crimes in 1890s Toronto. The season features Murdoch's first case involving the electrocution of a beauty queen and the subsequent murder of Alice Howard, the newly crowned Miss Toronto Electric and Light. The season also explores the city's debate over the transition from direct current to alternating current, with Murdoch investigating the murder of a dog during a public demonstration.
