In the waning days of World War II, the U.S. Navy cargo ship USS Reluctant operates in the South Pacific, far from active combat. Lt. (j.g.) Doug Roberts, the ship’s cargo officer and executive officer, is a kind, hardworking man who tries to shield his dispirited crew from the harsh discipline of their captain, Lt. Cmdr. Morton. Morton, a proud and domineering officer, refuses to grant the crew any liberty, citing strict orders, and has even been given a palm tree for past cargo success — a symbol of his inflated ego. Roberts is eager to transfer to a combat ship to join the fighting, but Morton consistently blocks his requests. His closest companions are Ensign Frank Thurlowe Pulver, the laundry and morale officer, and Doc, the ship’s physician. Pulver is timid and avoids Morton, while Doc is a steady presence.
