In New York City, a deadly disease called Strickler’s Disease is spreading through cockroaches, killing hundreds of children. Unable to find a cure, Dr. Peter Mann (Jeremy Northam), deputy director of the CDC, recruits entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) to help. She uses genetic engineering to create the “Judas Breed” — a hybrid of a mantis and a termite that releases an enzyme accelerating the roaches’ metabolism, causing them to starve and die. The plan works, and the epidemic is eradicated. Three years later, strange disappearances and gruesome subway incidents begin. A boy, Chuy (Alexander Goodwin), witnesses a man being dragged underground and calls him “Mr. Funny Shoes.” Later, two kids sell a strange insect to Susan, who tests it and realizes it’s a Judas Breed. She discovers the insects have survived and evolved into large, humanoid predators capable of mimicking humans.
