Kusah Hakwaan
DVD
Format: Pre-Owned DVD
Kusah Hakwaan is a 1999 Native Alaskan legend film directed by Sean Morris, notable for being the first Alaskan production made entirely by Alaskans and the first to feature dialogue in the Tlingit language The Bedlam Files. It blends horror with cultural storytelling, set in a Tlingit clan house where a tribal elder, Kuth Ka (Robert Gales), moves between the contemporary and spirit worlds to recount the centuries-old tale of Kusah Hakwaan, the “Demon Cannibal”. The story follows two brothers, Shawan (Don Savage) and Yuntun (Paul Asicksik), who set out on a mountain hunt. They are warned by the supernatural Trickster Raven (Gary Waid) about the presence of Kusah Hakwaan, a cannibal demon. The brothers encounter nightmares filled with red smoke, a symbol of the demon’s lair. With Raven’s help, they find two magical amulets — a lava-stone and a horn of water from the “top of the world” — to aid them in their quest.
