In 44 BC, Julius Caesar (Sir John Gielgud) returns to Rome in triumph after defeating Pompey’s sons. A Soothsayer warns him to “beware the Ides of March,” but Caesar dismisses the warning and enjoys his victory. Envious of Caesar’s growing power, Cassius (Richard Johnson) and other conspirators plot his assassination. They enlist Marcus Brutus (Jason Robards Jr.) as a member, convincing him that Caesar’s ambition threatens Rome’s liberties. Brutus, torn between loyalty and duty, ultimately joins the conspiracy.
