Strange Cargo: In a French Guiana penal colony, an escape attempt by hardened criminal Verne (Clark Gable) is thwarted by jaded prostitute Julie (Joan Crawford). Undaunted, Verne blackmails brutal killer Moll (Albert Dekker) to join his escape but is left behind only to be provided the route by a mysterious new prisoner, Cambreau (Ian Hunter). On the way to find Moll, Verne rescues Julie, and when they join the escape party, they find that Cambreau has a powerful, mysterious influence over the motley group.

A Woman's Face: Anna Holm (Joan Crawford) is a terribly disfigured Swedish woman and small-time criminal in Stockholm. Her terrible luck and resulting emotional tumult has left her unable to sustain relationships and ultimately pushes her to a life of blackmailing schemes and ennui. A young doctor (Melvyn Douglas) gives her the opportunity to regain some semblance of beauty and, with it, a chance at love. Will she be able to come to terms with her past and embrace a second chance at happiness?

Flamingo Road: Dancer Lane Bellamy (Joan Crawford) tours with a carnival, but is deserted in Boldon City when they flee to avoid their debts. Deputy Fielding Carlisle (Zachary Scott) arrives and, secretly smitten with her, helps Lane find employment as a waitress. However, scheming Sheriff Titus Semple's (Sydney Greenstreet) ambitious plans for Fielding to become a rep in the state legislature do not include his dating an itinerant woman, so he runs her out of town. Lane seeks revenge, but at what cost?

Torch Song: A hardened Broadway comedy star (Joan Crawford) becomes attracted to a blind pianist (Michael Wilding).
