Dakota: In 1875, professional gambler John Devlin (John Wayne) teams up with local wheat farmers to fight off greedy land speculators in Fargo, Dakota Territory, in a tense battle over land rights and survival.

In Old California: Tom Craig arrives in San Francisco on his way to Sacramento, where he is mocked for his Boston attire and manners. He impresses locals by bending a coin with one hand and treating a local, Kegs McKeever, for a toothache. On the riverboat to Sacramento, he befriends Lacey Miller (Binnie Barnes), carrying her across a mud puddle, which angers her fiancé, Britt Dawson (Albert Dekker). Dawson later frames Craig for poisoning medicine, but Craig clears his name during a Gold Rush epidemic
