Everybody Loves Raymond Season 1 establishes the main characters: sportswriter Ray Barone, his neurotic wife Debra, their young children, and his meddling parents and resentful brother, who live across the street. The early episodes focus on establishing the premise of the show—Ray's struggle to balance his own family with his intrusive family of origin—and introduce recurring dynamics like Marie's constant interference, Frank's grumpy comments, and Robert's simmering envy of Ray's success. Key early storylines include Debra's desire for a peaceful birthday, the introduction of running gags such as Marie's critical comments about Debra's cooking, and the setup for Ray's complicated but ultimately loving relationship with his quirky family.
