Set in the fictional town of Ballybeg, County Donegal, during the summer of 1936, the play is framed as a memory play narrated by Michael Evans, who recalls his childhood at age seven. The story centers on the five Mundy sisters—Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose, and Christina—all unmarried and living in a modest cottage with Michael’s mother, Christina. Each sister has distinct roles: Kate is a schoolteacher, Maggie manages the household, and Agnes and Rose knit gloves to sell in town, while Christina cares for Michael and struggles with the social stigma of having an illegitimate son.
