Elizabeth (Shirley Temple) lives in a strict, regimented orphanage with her older sister Mary Blair (Rochelle Hudson). Elizabeth’s cheerful but mischievous nature often gets her into trouble, especially with the stern superintendent. During a visit by wealthy, solitary trustee Edward Morgan (John Boles), Elizabeth’s antics catch his attention. He intervenes to save her from being sent to a public institution, then adopts both sisters under the alias “Mr. Jones” to avoid making them feel indebted.
