The story centers on Charles Darwin, a brilliant but emotionally tormented naturalist, living a quiet life with his devoutly religious wife Emma and their children. He is especially close to his eldest daughter, Annie, a precocious ten-year-old who is fascinated by nature and science, including his theories of evolution. Annie’s curiosity leads her to challenge her family’s religious beliefs, such as the idea that dinosaurs never went extinct, which angers their local clergy.
