The season explores Buffy's emotional turmoil as she engages in a toxic relationship with Spike, just to feel something, while the rest of the Scoobies deal with their own issues: Xander leaves Anya at the altar, and Willow descends into a dark and dangerous use of magic, particularly after the tragic death of her girlfriend, Tara.
