Beginners is a 2010 romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Mike Mills, inspired by his own father’s late-life coming out and marriage to a younger man. It follows Oliver Fields, a 38-year-old graphic designer in Los Angeles, who is recently widowed after the death of his mother, Georgia, and is still grieving the loss of his father, Hal.
