Antony and Cleopatra (1972), directed by and starring Charlton Heston, is a lavish adaptation of William Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, produced by the Rank Organisation. The story opens in Egypt, where messengers from Rome inform Mark Antony, a Roman general and member of the Second Triumvirate, of political developments. Antony, already in love with Cleopatra, is initially uninterested, but she persuades him to listen. Proculeius reveals that Antony’s wife Fulvia has died after a rebellion with Antony’s brother Lucius against Octavius, another triumvir.
