A Civil Action is a 1998 American legal drama film directed by Steven Zaillian, based on the true story of the 1986 court case Anderson v. Cryovac, Inc. Set in Woburn, Massachusetts, the film follows Jan Schlichtmann, a tenacious personal injury lawyer, who takes on a case involving two corporations, Beatrice Foods and W.R. Grace, accused of contaminating the town's water supply with trichloroethylene, a solvent linked to numerous cases of leukemia and cancer among local residents. The film explores themes of environmental justice and corporate responsibility, highlighting the moral complexities of pursuing justice against powerful corporations. It stars John Travolta as Schlichtmann and Robert Duvall as the defense attorney, Jerome Facher.
