"Too Late the Hero" is a 1970 American war film directed by Robert Aldrich. The film is set in the Pacific theatre of World War II and follows the story of Lieutenant Junior Grade Sam Lawson, a Japanese-language interpreter who has managed to avoid combat. His commanding officer, Captain John G. Nolan, unexpectedly cancels his leave and orders him to join a British infantry commando unit in the New Hebrides for a combat mission. The mission is to destroy a Japanese radio transmitter to prevent the Japanese from sounding the alarm about an American naval convoy. The film explores themes of reluctant heroism, class conflict within units, and the brutal randomness of survival in combat.
