They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is a 1969 American neo-noir psychological drama film set during the Great Depression. The story follows Robert Syverton, a homeless man, who participates in a bizarre dance marathon at Santa Monica Pier, where he encounters a group of desperate individuals seeking a chance to win a $1,500 cash prize. The emcee, Rocky, exploits the contestants' vulnerabilities for entertainment, leading to emotional and physical exhaustion. As the marathon progresses, the characters face increasing despair, with some resorting to desperate measures to survive. The film explores themes of desperation, exploitation, and the dehumanizing nature of competition during a time of widespread hardship.
