The Lorax (1971) by Dr. Seuss is a cautionary tale about environmental destruction caused by greed. The Once-ler narrates how he destroyed a thriving forest of Truffula Trees to mass-produce "Thneeds," ignoring warnings from the Lorax, a creature who "speaks for the trees." The story ends with a wasteland and a plea for reforestation.
