Set in the 1830s, The Governess is a British period drama written and directed by Sandra Goldbacher, starring Minnie Driver as Rosina da Silva, a sophisticated and educated Jewish woman from a wealthy Sephardic family in London. When her father is murdered and leaves her family in debt, Rosina refuses an arranged marriage to an older suitor. Instead, she decides to support her family by working as a governess, even if it means taking to the stage like her aunt, a renowned singer IMDb. To conceal her Jewish heritage, she adopts the name Mary Blackchurch — a Protestant of partial Italian descent — and takes a position with the Cavendish family on the Isle of Skye in the Hebrides.
