Adventures of Don Juan: (1948) In this later-career swashbuckler, Flynn plays Don Juan, a charming but dangerous nobleman. He rescues the Spanish queen (Viveca Lindfors) from the clutches of an evil duke, blending romance, intrigue, and action in a warm, witty tone.

The Adventures of Robin Hood: (1938) In this lavish, Academy Award–winning retelling, Errol Flynn plays Robin Hood, a charismatic outlaw who leads a band of Merry Men in Sherwood Forest. With Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, Flynn’s Robin deftly outwits and outduels the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham (Basil Rathbone) and his henchman (Claude Rains), ultimately freeing the people of Sherwood from tyranny.

Captain Blood: (1935) Flynn’s breakout role as Sir Francis Blood, a 17th-century physician imprisoned for treason, who escapes and becomes a pirate. After a series of daring raids and naval battles, Blood is captured by the Spanish, but his wit and courage win the admiration of the Spanish queen (Olivia de Havilland), leading to a romantic and adventurous resolution.

The Sea Hawk: (1940) Flynn commands a 40-gun galleon, the Sea Hawk, in the Spanish Armada’s path. After a daring escape from captivity, he warns England of the Spanish fleet’s approach. The film is a high-seas adventure filled with cannon fire, swordplay, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s sweeping score.
