The hotel's malevolent supernatural entities feed on Danny's psychic abilities, or "the shine," and manipulate Jack's inner darkness, his addiction, and his rage to drive him to insanity and violence against his family. The story follows Danny's terrifying visions and his parents' desperate struggle to survive the possessed hotel's influence, which ultimately seeks to claim the boy.
