The film centers on Roman J. Israel, a brilliant but eccentric defense attorney working at a small law firm in Los Angeles. He is deeply committed to civil rights and spends his days drafting legal briefs while his partner, William Jackson, handles courtroom appearances. When Jackson suffers a heart attack, Roman's world is turned upside down as he learns that the firm is in financial trouble and must adapt to a new environment at a high-powered law firm led by George Pierce (Colin Farrell).
