Benedict Cumberbatch plays Christopher Tietjens, the second son of the lord of the manor of Groby, Yorkshire. A disconsolate statistician in London, Christopher is a traditional, principled man with strong Tory beliefs and a sense of “parade” — a code of conduct essential to self-respect and social standing Roger Ebert. He is married to Sylvia Satterthwaite (Rebecca Hall), a manipulative socialite who has married him knowing she is already pregnant (possibly by another man). Despite Sylvia’s affairs, Christopher maintains a façade of contentment.
