Pals of the Saddle (1938) is a "Three Mesquiteers" Western where John Wayne's Stony Brooke and pals stop foreign agents smuggling poison gas chemicals, involving espionage, Wayne going undercover, getting framed, and clearing his name, a timely plot with action and humor, despite criticism of the supporting cast. The film blends traditional Western elements with early WWII-era intrigue, marking Wayne's start in the series before Stagecoach made him a superstar.
