In NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9, the team is in disarray after Hetty submits her retirement papers and disappears, prompting the arrival of Executive Assistant Director Shay Mosley who takes over and makes staffing changes. Sam is still grieving the death of his wife, Michelle, and insists Callen find a new partner, while the team investigates a variety of cases, including the death of a South Korean agent, high-profile counterfeiting schemes, and a complex, Frankenstein-like murder plot. The season also deals with the fallout of Callen's father being apprehended in Iran, the mole compromising the team, and the eventual rescue of Hetty after she is taken hostage in Vietnam.
