The miniseries tells the story of Mama Flora, who reflects on her life while trying to help her granddaughter get her life right and be a better mother for her son. The miniseries takes place from the 1910s to the 1970s and includes pivotal historical events such as the Great Depression, two world wars, and the Civil Rights Movement. It highlights the strength of matriarchal figures in overcoming poverty, racism, and loss, while tracing the evolution of Black experiences in the United States from sharecropping to modern times.
