In Bleach's first arc, the "Substitute Shinigami Arc," the story begins with Ichigo Kurosaki, a high schooler who can see ghosts, meeting Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper (Shinigami). After Rukia is injured, she transfers her powers to Ichigo, making him a Substitute Shinigami. As he learns about the world of spirits and Hollows from Rukia, Ichigo takes on the role of a Soul Reaper, fighting spirits and protecting the human world. The arc introduces key characters like Orihime and Chad, showcases conflicts with different types of Hollows, and culminates in Rukia's apprehension by the Soul Society. The arc ends with Ichigo and his new allies preparing to go to the Soul Society to rescue Rukia.
