The BBC's House of Cards trilogy (1990–1995), based on Michael Dobbs' novels, follows the ruthless rise and fall of Francis Urquhart (Ian Richardson), a Machiavellian Conservative Chief Whip. Through Shakespearean-style fourth wall breaks, Urquhart manipulates British politics to become Prime Minister, ruthlessly eliminating threats to maintain power, ultimately leading to his own downfall.
