Discovered singing gospel in California before defining the raw, urban sound of Bay Area R&B alongside legendary impresario Bob Geddins, Jimmy Wilson possessed one of the most versatile, pure, and soulful tenor voices of the 1950s. Moving west from Louisiana as part of the Great Migration, Wilson brought a deep church-honed pathos to secular music, seamlessly bridging down-home West Coast blues, uptempo jump-R&B, and early rock 'n' roll. Beyond his exceptional vocal range, Wilson was an accomplished songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose saxophone playing and arrangement skills anchored some of the finest Bay Area recordings of the era. "Honey Bee Blues: The A-Sides Collection 1951-60" brings together the very best of Wilson's singles across a decade of prolific recording for pioneering labels like Cava-Tone, Aladdin, Big Town, Rhythm, Chart, Goldband, and Duke. Anchored by his landmark 1953 Top 10 R&B smash "Tin Pan Alley"--a atmospheric masterpiece featuring the haunting guitar of Lafayette Thomas--this collection showcases Wilson at the absolute peak of his powers. Featuring collaborations with West Coast legends like Jimmy McCracklin, Clarence Garlow, and Scatman Crothers, these A-sides demonstrate Wilson's incredible stylistic evolution from postwar gospel-blues to uptown early '60s soul. Honey Bee Blues stands as the definitive document of a foundational West Coast artist whose timeless recordings continue to influence generations of blues and soul musicians.
