Lazy junior high student Reiji Ozora is introduced to a virtual reality game called Dragon Drive by his friend Maiko. After Reiji gets the smallest dragon, whom he names Chibi, they are transported to another world called Rikyu. There, they learn the game's creator, RI-ON, plans to use Dragon Drive to control dragons in Rikyu, and Reiji and Chibi are the key to saving both worlds.
