Buffy returns to Sunnydale after an attempt at a new life in Los Angeles, but finds her life complicated by the arrival of a new Slayer, Faith. The season's main plot involves the Mayor of Sunnydale, who is secretly preparing for a demonic "Ascension" on graduation day, while Buffy deals with the mysterious and chaotic return of Angel. The Scooby Gang faces challenges as they try to balance high school and their responsibilities as monster hunters, leading to deep character development for all of them, especially Willow who becomes more involved in witchcraft.
