In Awakenings, a shy neurologist, Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams), uses an experimental drug, L-DOPA, to "awaken" catatonic patients who have been in a frozen state since an epidemic decades earlier. The film follows the story of one patient, Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), as he experiences a miraculous rebirth into a world that has moved on for over 30 years. While the drug allows a temporary return to life, the patients face the emotional and physical challenges of re-entering society, and the effects of the medication eventually begin to fade.
